How to Play Japanese Crossword (Nonogram) Puzzles
What is a Nonogram?
A nonogram is a logic puzzle where each row and column has number clues that describe hidden blocks of filled cells. As you solve the clues correctly, a pixel-style image appears on the grid. Nonograms are also known as Japanese crosswords, Picross, Hanjie, and Griddlers.
How to Read the Clues
Each number tells you how many filled cells appear in one continuous group in that line. If there are multiple numbers, those groups appear in the same order, separated by at least one empty cell. For example, clues of 3 and 2 mean one block of three filled cells, then later one block of two.
Filling and Marking Cells
Use filled cells for spaces you know belong to the picture, and mark empty cells with X when a spot cannot be filled. Marking helps prevent mistakes and makes future deductions easier. As you cross-check rows and columns, uncertain cells become clear through logic.
Tips for Beginners
Start with lines that have large clues, because they offer the strongest information early. Use overlap logic to find guaranteed filled cells when a clue can only fit in a narrow range. Switch between rows and columns often so each solved line unlocks the next step.
